在挑选防火海绵时，主要以它的触感和弹性为判定的首要因素。摸起来应该有柔软的触感，并且富有延展性。除了特殊的大空海绵以外，一般防火海绵的外表越细腻，气孔越小越好。
另外，一个最实际的辨别方式是将海绵对折，互相搓一搓。如果没搓几下就掉海绵屑，就该把它淘汰了，正常海绵阳市都有少许气味，但如味臭难忍受的为使用劣质原料。而且好的防火海绵不易撕裂，轻轻手指一点就破的肯定是偷工减料的。
由于海绵都怕光，包括室内的灯光都有可能损坏它的质量，所以在购买海绵时，如果是挂成一排的陈列方式，不要拿第一个，而应拿后面的，因为后面的海绵不会享受很多的“日光浴”。
